Woman leaves mansion to dogs through estate planning

Estate planning is an essential part of making sure your wishes are honored after you become unable to care for yourself or die. While it isn't always pleasant to discuss, it can ensure that your wishes are followed no matter what another person thinks should be done with your property or money. One woman in another state wanted her house left to her three dogs, so that's exactly what she did through estate planning. Now, the three dogs and 2 other people have sold the mansion for $8.4 million dollars.

The other people involved where allowed to live in the house rent free, according to the estate, as long as they cared for the three dogs according to the woman's wishes. She left $1 million to her son, for reasons not discussed in the news report.

This shows that estate planning includes many different mechanisms that an allow you to control what happens with your belongings after you die. Knowing that your wishes will be carried can bring you great peace of mind. Many times people fail to plan in advance or make wills shortly before their death.

Making sure you plan early can help avoid a will being contested. If someone makes a will when they might not be mentally competent to understand what they are doing, family members might be more likely to contest the will if it isn't what they expect. Speaking with an estate planning attorney can help make sure all your affairs are in order, so your family doesn't have to worry after your death.
